Garra Rufa 5-6CM (Doctor Fish) The Doctor Fish is naturally distributed across a broad area, including the Jordan, Orontes, and Tigris-Euphrates River basins, as well as coastal rivers in northern Syria and southern Turkey. It thrives in clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated waters, characterized by rocky substrates that are rich in aufwuchs biofilms. To keep this species, the aquarium must be well-established and at least 4ft (120cm) long, with strong water movement and high oxygen levels. This fish does not do well in a typical community tank, so it’s essential to provide the conditions of highly oxygenated, fast-flowing waters, ideally achieved through powerful external canister filtration. The Doctor Fish is generally peaceful with other fish but can be somewhat territorial with its own species and those that look similar. In their natural habitat, they are often seen in loose groups, so it’s best to keep them in schools of five or more in aquariums that have plenty of visual barriers in the decor. If kept in smaller numbers, they may occasionally squabble, so aim for a good-sized group to prevent any single fish from facing constant aggression.
